From Graduate to Mentor: My Journey in BIM and Project Collaboration
On the 18th of July, I officially graduated with a Distinction in MSc Building Information Modelling & Project Collaboration from the University of Derby. I began the course in 2022; their part-time option allowed me to interact studying alongside other commitments with family and business life. It was a big decision, but one that felt really important for my personal development, keeping on top of industry knowledge and supporting others in the industry just starting out in their careers.
Graduation Day at Derby Arena
Graduation took place at the impressive Derby Arena and Stadium, under clear blue skies. Hosting around 500 other graduates, the event was incredibly organised with a great level of detail. The day was a perfect opportunity for me and those around me to reflect and look back on our hard work and energy we had put into reaching this celebratory milestone.
I’ve been deeply embedded in the built environment and creative sectors since 2012 when I started learning Revit. Up until 2015 I was involved in design, with focus on space planning. Since 2019, I have been actively working on live construction coordination projects. For me, pursuing a Master’s Degree wasn’t just about adding a qualification to my name, it was about strengthening the foundation of the services we offer at Diane Butterworth Ltd, and ensuring they continue to meet the highest industry standards.

Revit Automation & Industry Collaboration - Highlights from the Course
During the course, the wide range of different modules helped in reshaping my approach when it came to my work.
One standout in particular was Advanced Parametric Design, which went beyond just the basics of Revit family creation, and ventured into the powerful capabilities of Dynamo.
This module highlighted how coding and automation can transform BIM workflows, speeding up tasks and boosting efficiency. It was one of my favourites, and I’ve already implemented many of the techniques into our services at Diane Butterworth Ltd.
Other modules included:
- Environmental Risk and Responsibility
- Project Planning and Value Engineering
- Sustainable Design and Risk Management
- Design Analysis
- Information Management and Project Collaboration
Central to the course content was developing an understanding of ISO 19650, including its associated processes and documentation. This was instantly valuable in my business life and was knowledge that could be transferred in conversations with our clients, many of whom are still navigating the complexities of digital construction – some for the first time.
Starting My Mentorship Journey
When my business first started, I remember how difficult it was to ask for advice or help. It could even seem overwhelming. I had lots of questions, but it was such a new industry at the time that it meant that in many ways the support didn’t even exist yet! That feeling and experience resonated with me. I hoped that in the future I’d be in the position to help others and prevent that uncertainty I used to feel.
Earlier this year, I decided to sign up to be a mentor with Women in BIM. Last month I was matched with my first mentee.
Our brief, 30-minute call was a great starting point. I was admittedly nervous beforehand, and I questioned if I’d be able to offer anything useful.
Despite these reservations, the conversation flowed with ease. We spoke about where she’s at within her career, what she wants to learn, and how I might be able to support her.
It really felt like the beginning of something meaningful, and I’m looking forward to how our conversations will grow over the coming months. I’ve already shared some starting points and resources for her to explore while waiting for her role to begin.
Upcoming Events
This September, we’ll be attending a Women in BIM exhibition in London, where we’ll be providing a short talk- about 10 minutes – about our experience with the mentoring scheme so far.
Even though we’ve just started, I’m excited to support the development of my first mentee, continue the mentoring scheme and spread the message.
