How do you measure your own success?
As a business owner, you would think it would be securing a particular contract or achieving X amount of profit. However, as the years pass and you continue to succeed in these areas, that sense of achievement can become normal.I aspire to become an influence and secure my place within my specific field. There are individuals I’m in awe of when I read their LinkedIn profiles, learn about their journey and listen to the wealth of knowledge and experience they have.
These individuals are my measure of success. – how close is the gap between me and them?
Success is a journey and shouldn’t be rushed. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new, add another project to the portfolio or be inspired by a fellow professional.
Many of these days will also feel like a waste of time! Hours spent solving a mundane software glitch, being stuck in traffic after a long meeting (FOC) or paying heart-sinking VAT bills!

It is 2023, and my business has been running successfully for 8 years. This year has been pivotal in my career as I enrolled on a master’s degree in ‘Building Information Modelling and Project Collaboration’ at Derby University.
I am currently 50% of the way through, and already the journey has begun to provide clarification of my skills and worthy to call myself a professional within BIM. Diane Butterworth Ltd and I personally have now been registered as a CIAT affiliate whilst working towards attaining Chartered Architectural Technologist, MCIAT status.
Letters and qualifications are not the sole validation; combined with experience and the right mindset, anyone can achieve a successful career in BIM.
My advice to anyone seeking a successful career, whether employed or in their own practice –
Find your passion and skill, then run with it!
I don’t know the end goal or if there is a finish line! But I do know BIM found me, and I am dedicated to making my mark.
